IAA (OISC) Level 1 Training Course

This training course is designed for individuals who wish to prepare for the IAA (formerly OISC) Level 1 assessment and begin providing regulated immigration advice at IAA Immigration Level 1. 

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the UK immigration system, focusing on the the knowledge and practical understanding required to meet the Immigration Advice Authority’s competence standards. It is suitable for those at an early stage of their immigration advice career, including aspiring advisers, caseworkers, and individuals working within regulated organisations who are seeking to formalise their knowledge.

Participants will also learn about the IAA Code of Standards and the ethical considerations involved in providing immigration advice. 

The programme combines clear explanations of core immigration concepts with exam-focused preparation, helping candidates understand both what the law says and how it is applied in practice.

Overview of the Level 1 Assessment

The IAA Immigration Level 1 assessment is an entry level qualification for those who wish to provide immigration advice and services in the UK. 

 

You do not need to hold a degree, pass the SQE or be a solicitor. 

The assessment consists of 2 sections 

  • Section 1 has 20 multiple choice questions

  • Section 2 requires written answers for scenario-based questions.

You must pass both sections to pass the overall assessment. The pass mark for the Level 1 assessment is 60%

You must first register through the IAA portal and book the assessment through the IAA. 

What work can a Immigration Level 1 Adviser carry out?

A Level 1 Immigration adviser may provide advice on basic and straightforward immigration matters.

This typically includes:

  • Work visas 

  • Study visas

  • Family visas

  • Nationality Applications

  • Straight forward applications

Level 1 advisers must work within the limits of their authorisation and, where required, under appropriate supervision.

Who should consider this course? 

This course is intended for individuals who are at an early stage of their immigration advice career, including:

  • Aspiring immigration advisers. 

  • Caseworkers and legal assistants.

  • Staff within IAA-authorised organisations (such as charities) seeking Level 1 competence.

IAA expects you to have 3 months of relevant experience to sit the Level 1 assessment, however, this is discretionary. If you have no immigration experience, you can make up for the experience with other forms of advice (such as Debt, Housing, Welfare).

Completing own applications or applications on behalf of friends and family to the Home Office will not be considered as sufficient work experience.

What this course covers

This course covers the key subject areas examined in the Level 1 assessment, including:

  • Overview of the UK immigration system

  • Immigration rules and categories relevant at Level 1

  • Entry clearance and leave to remain applications 

  • Nationality and citizenship basics

  • Professional standards and the IAA code of Standards

  • Exam technique and scenario-based questions

Content is structure to support both understanding and assessment preparation. 

This course is a training and preparation programme and is not an assessment. 

Passing the assessment does not automatically authorise an individual to practise independently. 

Authorisation depends on working within, or being linked to, an IAA accredited organisation.

Course fee

The fee for this IAA Immigration level 1 training course is £200 per participant.

The fee is only requested once a minimum cohort size is reached. ​​

How will you learn from this course

This course is delivered as an intensive two-day online programme, consisting of five hours of live teaching per day.

The live sessions are designed to provide focused, structured teaching on the key areas tested in the IAA Level 1 assessment, with an emphasis on clarity, practical understanding, and exam relevance. Sessions are delivered in a webinar format and include explanations, worked examples, and opportunities for guided discussion.​ 

 

This training is delivered by practitioners working within an IAA Level 3 accredited organisation.​
